Introduction:
National Aluminium company Limited (NALCO) is considered to
be a turning point in the history of Indian Aluminium Industry. In a major leap
formed, NALCO has not only addressed the need for self- sufficiency
in aluminum, but also give the country technological edge in producing this
strategic material at par with the best in the world.
Following the discovery of large reserves of Bauxite Ore in the East Coast and
preliminary Project work done by Bharat Aluminum company Limited, NALCO
was set up by Govt . of India in 1981 to implement one of the largest multi-
locational integrated Aluminium projects of the world with its own captive Power
Plant and port facilities.
NALCO's original Project cost of Rs. 2408 crores was partly
financed by 980 millions US dollars, extended by consortiums of international
banks. By 1998, the company not only achieved a zero debt status, but also is
going steady with a self funded major expansion plan involving an investment
of Rs. 3900 crores.
The consistent track record in capacity utilization, technology absorption,
quality assurance, expert performance and posting of profits. Nalco gives bright
picture of India's Industrial capability. Nalco is the first company to get
registered with the Landon Metal Exchange. The company is an ISO 9002-1400 certified
company. It has emerged as the largest integrated bauxite - alumina-aluminium
complex in Asia.
NALCO ‘s products are sold worldwide in about 30 countries
including UK, USA, France, Namay, Brazil, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Russia,
Australia, China and Japan etc. The company is currently implementing a major
Rs. 3700 crores.
Expansion plan to increase mine capacity from 2.4 million tonnes to 4.8 million
tones, alumina Mines capacity from 0.8 million stones to 1.575 million tones,
aluminium capacity form 2,30,00 tones to 3,45,000 tonnes power plant capacity
from 720 MW to 8.40 MW.
Apart from expansion, the company is also implementing several diversification
and value added projects like special alumina, zeolite, gallium, aluminum auto
wheels etc. at as estimated capital outlay of Rs. 190 crores.
