Marketing Strategies of Flashlight Industry at RPE Electronics

Rs. 1,000.00

Introduction:
The flashlight is primarily divided into two segments i.e. Metal and plastic. Metal segment is further divided into two sub-segments i.e. Brass and Non-Brass. Non-brass metal torches and plastic are in the economy category. Non-brass torches are generally made of aluminium and sheet metal. Indian manufacturers generally produce aluminium torches because of superior quality though the costs are similar. The costs and prices of brass flashlights are significantly higher than that of Non brass flashlights. The dumped imports from China have very adversely affected the market of Non-brass metal flashlights. Imports of plastic flashlights are not significant. The present petition does not include imports of plastic flashlights.
India has five major dry cell battery players Eveready Industries (Brand: Eveready, market share 47 per cent), Nippo Batteries Company Ltd (Nippo: 28 per cent), Panasonic Battery India Company Ltd (Novino: 13 per cent), Powercell Batteries (BPL: 8 per cent) and Geep Batteries India Pvt Ltd (Geep: 4 per cent). Nippo and Panasonic Battery are both powered by technology from Matsushita Electric, Japan.
Except Powercell and Geep, all other dry cell battery makers have flashlights / torches made from metal and plastic in their product portfolio. Geep Batteries is setting up a torchlight plant in Himachal Pradesh, while Eveready Industries is the largest torchlight manufacturer in South Asia, selling around 50 lakh torchlights per year that account for a consumption of 5 to 6 crore battery cells per year. There are two producers of metal flashlight in Indian in the organized sector. They are Eveready & GEEP. Production of Eveready alone is more than 77% of Indian production.
Nippo today, is a household name in India. A name synonymous with batteries, manufactured by Nippo Batteries Co. Ltd., (Formerly known as Indo National Limited) in collaboration with the world famous Matsushita Electric Industrial Company, Japan. Since its inception in 1972, Nippo has been providing millions of its customers with quality and performance that is second to none, crossing the landmark cumulative production of over 7000 million batteries in April 2001.
