Introduction:
“Within an arms length of desire” is the clarion call, creating an elaborate network of members who provide space, pay for the product, stock it and forward it to the next member in the channel for a profit or a service fee.
The project highlights about the distribution network of an FMCG firm through various intermediaries which necessarily include Distributors, Exclusive Outlets and the concerned Sales Personnel through which the products ultimately reach the end users.
In the process of distribution there are situations where various issues regarding channel management and evaluation of channel members crop up. In my project “A study on the Distributor Service Level of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd” I have emphasized on the coverage, order processing time, credit period, replacement of unsold & damaged products of the concerned Distributors of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd for Kolkata Metro and Howrah.
The survey revealed that the distributors’ performance was not satisfactory with respect to coverage, credit and replacements. But order processing time, level of Co-operation etc... were more or less satisfactory.
The objectives of the study are:
- To understand the reason for the existence of the distribution channels.
- To understand the various types of functions performed by the different channel members.
- To understand and appreciate the process of channel management.
