Internet Retailing

Rs. 1,000.00

Introduction:
The e-initiative is a diversification vehicle. Wall-Mart is an established supermarket chain in India. The chain has a huge following of customers and has moderately good level of earnings. The company has always been customer centric and has always devised ways to make the interaction between the consumers and the store more efficient and hassle free. Therefore it has decided to go on-line with this e-initiative called E-Mart.

This would be a truly one stop portal for all needs of an average Indian household. The range of offerings will include groceries, books, music albums, videos, maintenance services, etc. All these services will be introduced in phase wise fashion beginning with the grocery section. This would be the flagship offer and initially will be launched in 4 cities only.

The company has to carefully design its communication and interfaces to ensure that people are attracted to their site. At present, the company is faced with two major problems. First is the low level of computers/ internet penetration. And, second is the lack of awareness on part of the users of the Internet in India. Also, the company has to take into account the feedback of consumers abroad who have used such services offered in their country. This will help the company better understand the finer aspects of such an initiative.

The Company does not expect the sales to explode with the first two years of operations. While most companies abroad charge a delivery fee, Wall-Mart will not charge any delivery fee from its customers provided the order is of a specified value. The company is expected to project losses for 7 out of the first 8 quarters. The company does earn some profit in the 8th quarter of the next two years.

In the long, term internet is the medium through which even the simplest of transactions will take place. All such a initiative does not have a vast market currently, in the near future, online grocery shops will be the most preferred way of purchasing grocery. Thus although the immediate future of the company is not very bright, it is expected that the company will reap the benefits of its efforts in the medium and long term.
