Introduction:
Indian Leather industry is spread over organized as well as unorganised sector. The unorganised sector i.e. small scale, cottage and artisan sectors account for over 75% of the total production. Though traditionally the industry has been an exporter of tanned hides and skins, from the early seventies itself, it set its sights on becoming a major player in the leather product segments. The industry uses primarily indigenous natural resources with little dependence on imported resources.
The opportunities for new suppliers to enter the foreign markets are determined not only by the prevailing demand and supply conditions but also, very importantly, by the ability of producers to meet the very strict quality standards demanded by importers. There are attractive prospects for suppliers of Leather goods from India to foreign markets, but failure to comply with the required quality standards will mean no hope of doing business.
